A Brief History - Arklow Port & the Tyrell Family

Arklow Marine Services LocationArklow Marine Services is a family business run by the Tyrrell family, who have been involved in boat building in Arklow since 1864 and are a fifth generation that continue on this proud tradition today.  The main proprietors are John and Billy Tyrrell who both hold qualifications in marine engineering and naval architecture respectively.  During this period the art of shipbuilding has evolved through many phases, from traditional boat building through to steel fabrication and the latest material being aluminium used in the building of these vessels.

Arklow Marine Ship Building FacilitiesCAD/Cam and CNC profiling have replaced some of the tools and techniques of the past, but our commitment to quality, competitive pricing and efficient delivery which has been the hallmark of Tyrrell-built boats, has remained our guiding light.

Currently employing 20 staff the yard continues to serve the marine industry though new vessel buildings, ship repair and refurbishing works.  Through diversification the company has developed a strong engineering base to it's business and provides an extensive engineering service to state and private companies.

Operating from two custom built workshops on the North Quay in Arklow, one workshop is used as an engineering works and the other as the building hall where the fabrication works are carried out.  The yard is well equipped with modern plant and equipment to provide quality products on time at competitive prices.

This blend of modern technology with time-honour belief in the highest standards has made Arklow Marine Services Ireland's leading steel and aluminium boat builder.
